Support for same sex marriage has taken myriad forms, none quite so functional and symbolic as the Australian Marriage Equality rings from Australian jewellery designer Nadia Neuman.
Since being launched last year, Nadia Neuman’s Australian Marriage Equality rings have been shipped to Italy, the United States, the United Kingdom and New Zealand.
Numerous celebrities have worn the ring as a sign of support, among them Rachael Taylor, Jimmy Barnes, Julia Morris, Paula Abdul, Danni Minogue, Jess Hart, Delta Goodrum, Ruby Rose, Samantha Jade, and Academy-Award award-winning costume designer Tim Chappel.
“The initiative and its success in terms of raising awareness and money for the cause went above and beyond all of my expectations,” Neuman told ExcessAllAreas. “To have so many incredible people support the campaign was heart-warming.
“I also love knowing there are people all over the world wearing the ring proudly and sharing the story of equality.”
The Australian Marriage Equality ring is available in 18-carat rose, white or yellow gold, 9-carat gold or silver and ranges from $300 to $1900. There’s a Luxury collection which includes a diamond pave version for $4000 (below), and the Limited Edition, which features a rare pink or blue Argyle diamond for $10,000.
A percentage of profits from the sale of the ring have been donated to Australian Marriage Equality to contribute toward lobbying and education of equal marriage rights in Australia.
Neuman is the Creative Director of the leading Australian pink and coloured diamond specialist retail family, Mondial, who have stores in two of Sydney’s most glamorous luxury retail spaces: The Queen Victoria Building and The Strand Arcade. Nadia opened the Strand boutique in 2010 (calling it Mondial by Nadia Neuman) and recently upgraded to an elegant gallery a few shops along.
Neuman’s inspired designs are as eclectic as her personal style. They manage to be both maverick and commercial.
“Tyger Tyger”, a fan made from recycled gold, ethically mined diamonds and sustainable turkey feathers (the iridescent feathers had diamonds set along each quill) won the Master Jewellery Award in Rio Tinto’s Global Design Competition a few years ago, and was featured at a special showcase ahead of the Academy Awards in 2012. The hand-held folding fan, measuring around 21cm in width when open, took 225 hours of handcrafting to complete. The tiger motif represented nature as an endangered creature – a reminder of the need to care for the earth.
Like marriage equality its genesis was a subject close to her heart.
Said Neuman at the time: “Since the movie Blood Diamond, we have seen a steady increase in clients wanting ethically sourced materials and, of course, to ensure that the diamonds are conflict-free. The typical ‘green’ jewellery consumer is no longer a fashion-challenged hippie but more likely an affluent professional woman who wants to make her purchase count.”
